A childless woman prays that she and her husband might have a child, "even a little child, no bigger than the tip of my finger." Her prayer is answered, and a son is born to them but he is indeed very tiny. Little Fingerling, as they call him, leaves home at fifteen, to find his way in the world, although he is still no larger than a finger. But he soon learns, it is what is inside a person that counts.
