"A Savage Darkness represents a further step in Michael Bullock's progress towards achieving in linear and prose poems that state of surreality in which the mundane and the marvellous merge on a plance of existence transfigured by the mutual interpenetration of the two. The poems move between the twin poles of lyricism and irony towards a delirium of the senses in which the world is subjected to every kind of imaginative manipulation and transformation, with overtones of a sombre eroticism.
