Captain Philip Blackwood, serving with the Royal Marines in the mid-nineteenth century, is aboard the HMS "Audacious." He sees action against West African slavers and against Russians in the Crimea. In between battles he is beset with family and personal problems and comes up against greedy, glory-seeking superiors.
