Set in Victorian England. Adam Swann has just returned from army service in the Crimea and in India. He marries Henrietta Rawlinson and founds a company that operates a chain of road haulage depots, dubbed "Swann-on-Wheels" by his new wife. The successes and failures of Swann's enterprise mirror the social history of the period.
