Summary
This report uses the United Nations Human Development Index and other indicators from the UN Human Development Report to develop a relative ranking of the Atlantic Provinces in comparison to Canada as a whole and to other industrialized countries. The Index indirectly assesses the development of people, as made possible through the existence or effectiveness of health services, education, and economic opportunity. Other indicators relate to such matters as employment, urbanization, violence and crime, social investment, natural resources, energy consumption, environment and pollution, and national income accounts. The results help identify some gaps or challenges that Atlantic Canada needs to address and indicate some directions for public policy.
