Summary
This report summarizes results of a multi-year mapping program on the inner shelf & coasts of north-east Newfoundland. The purpose of the program was to map the distribution of surficial sediments and the abundance of placer minerals, particularly gold. After introductory sections on the regional setting of the study area and the research mehods used, the report presents results regarding: the Quaternary stratigraphy of the inner shelf; interpretations of glaciation history & post-glacial sea levels; coastal geomorphology & sediments; surficial sediments & gold occurrence; and regional geochemistry & gold occurrence. The final section describes simple conceptual models to explain the variation in character of modern marine, intertidal, and supratidal environments within the study area.
