Summary
The principal objective of this book is to reconstruct and explain the patterns of migration from (mainly) the southwest and southern regions of England to Newfoundland, virtually from their inception in the early seventeenth century, and the related process of settlement formation that followed. Although these processes persisted for over three centuries, this book focuses on the critical period--the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries--which brought most of our English fore bearers to the island.
