In the Old West, the peril to South Texas from Mexican marauders was a constant danger. Men retired for the night with the knowledge that the next day they might arise robbed of their livestock, left destitute, or having to dig graves for their neighbors. The Mexicans never forgave the Texans for rebelling against Mexico and establishing a republic of Texas or for joining the United States.
