When Lois Meade is asked to clean for Tresham's mayor, this only arouses her curiosity, especially when the mayor's limousine is seen to collect a package from the dubious shop opposite her office. Gradually Lois uncovers a web of deceit, sex for sale, and murder amid the tranquillity of rural life, and it is time for her old admirer Chief Inspector Hunter Cowgill to become involved.
