Commemorates the WWI battle of Vimy Ridge. On April 9, 1917, a corps of Canadian soldiers captured the strategic French ridge from the Germans. This marked the first time Canadians had fought as an independent force, not as part of the British army. The battle took the lives of 5,000 Canadian soldiers.
