Jade is a nine-year-old who works in her family's Chinese restaurant, The Fragrant Garden, every day after school, mostly helping to clean up. She longs to take on more responsibility, but is told by her father that she is too young. When a fire breaks out in the kitchen, Jade's quick-thinking response wins her praise and a promise that her father will teach her to use the cash register beginning the next day.
