In 1000 AD, five centuries before John Cabot set foot on the shores of Newfoundland, a Norse expedition led by the legendary Leif Erickson explored the New World. They established a camp in the region which, after the discovery of wild grapes, they named "Vinland", the Land of Wine. In 1960, a Norwegian couple on a quest to find the legendary site discovered that overgrown ridges near L'Anse aux Meadows were actually the foundations of Norse buildings from the 11th century.
