Summary
It has been called "the bloodiest nine hours in Canadian military history". On the morning of August 19, 1942, a mostly Canadian force of over 6,000 men attacked the Nazi-held French port of Dieppe. But nearly everything went wrong. Most of those who landed on the pebbled beaches were either killed, wounded or taken prisoner. For years, many have claimed that the valuable lessons from Dieppe helped lead to victory over Adolf Hitler. But was the price of learning too high?
