Summary
The Northern Renaissance produced some of the greatest artists and the boldest innovations, not the least of which was the invention of oil painting itself. The Golden age of Dutch painting fell in the 1600s. It was a pocket of enlightenment celebrating trade and commerce, education, religious free thought, writing, invention, innovation and art. Rembrandt van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer, Pieter De Hooch, Franz Halls, and Judith Leyster, Carel Fabricius, and Jan Steen, among many others, were products of this special age and greatly influenced the arts.
