Ben Braddock, returning home from college, is the victim of his parents' affluence, an object to be paraded before their friends. He is sexually initiated by Mrs. Robinson and falls in love with her daughter. Nichols' racy narrative style and use of witty dialogue won him an Oscar. His view of middle-class values gained him a following among young audiences who identified with the director's treatment of the generation gap.
