Presumed dead by the Stockholm police -- with a couple of notable exceptions, including homicide detective Ewert Grens -- master criminal and undercover informant Piet Hoffmann is now on the run from the Swedish authorities, living with his wife and two young sons under an assumed name in South America. Hoffmann stays in touch with his former police handler, Erik Wilson, but unfortunately there is no money to be had in maintaining his unofficial connection to the Swedish police. Instead, he accepts two lucrative jobs that make good use of his experience as a double-agent in Europe's drug wars: he is recruited as a high-level enforcer for a Colombian cocaine cartel and simultaneously accepts an offer from the DEA to work as an infiltrator to bring the cartel down. The FBI even lends credence to his cover story by adding Piet's alias to the Most Wanted List. But when the Speaker of the House of Representatives is kidnapped by the cartel during an official visit to Colombia, everything changes--fast. Suddenly, Piet is party to the highest-profile kidnapping of an American political figure in history and therefore directly in the firing line in what is quickly dubbed "the Next War on Terror" by the media. Both the drug cartel and the DEA agents in charge of the case in Colombia expect Piet's loyalty, but everything he does risks his relationship with the other side. Soon enough, despite his best efforts to stay on top of the game, both sides want him dead, and he is desperate for a helping hand. A glimmer of hope comes from an unexpected corner, for dogged, stubborn detective Ewert Grens has figured out where Piet has been hiding for the past few years. But even if he gets to Piet in time, will it be enough to save the double agent's life?
