Summary
1816. With the Napoleonic Wars over, the French hurry back to Newfoundland to fish for cod. The same year, the Urdu left the port of Bordeaux with an English crew on board. Thus began the enterprise of James Dower, a colonel determined to found a new Eden on the coast of Newfoundland. Following the rhythm of the seasons and the comings and goings of the fishermen, the establishment of Conche prospered under the liberal leadership of its master, despite the harshness of the climate, the prowling Navy, and the divisions that persisted between Catholics and Protestants. If the offshore wind is indomitable, certain divisions from the Old Continent are as much.
