Summary
On 13 November 2007, six hundred detectives and thirty public prosecutors raided more than fifty addresses in the Netherlands. A criminal investigation exposes a widespread fraud network at the top of Dutch business. The extensive fraud with real estate of companies such as Philips, ABN Amro and Rabobank, which is being mapped out by the judicial authorities, was committed under the eyes of municipal authorities and well-known Dutch people such as Joop van den Ende, Hans Wiegel, Jan Hommen and John Fentener van Vlissingen. The suspected project developers, pension fund directors and real estate dealers were able to siphon off tens of millions from their companies undisturbed for years, with the help of accountants, bankers and civil-law notaries, or so it is suspected. The former Bouwfonds and Philips Pensioenfonds claim damage of a quarter of a billion euros. In the autumn of 2009 the sampling process will start. Since the spectacular invasion of justice in 2007, journalists Vasco van der Boon and Gerben van der Marel for Het Financieele Dagblad have been following developments in the case of the largest company burglary in the Netherlands ever. The real estate fraud describes for the first time the dark side of the Dutch real estate world, with its us-know-us culture, the awarding of big money and sleeping supervisors.
