Them is the story of a teenager who is the victim of bullying. A young man beaten, extorted, ridiculed excessively by classmates, without apparent rhyme or reason. A young person whose distress is ignored by the silent witnesses who are the other students, the school staff, the parents, the rare friends. His pain is so acute, and his agony so long, that they will incite him to take revenge on his torturers, to become the source of a violence that is a priori inconceivable. Through short chapters, Patrick Isabelle tells the genesis of a drama, a genesis which in itself constitutes another drama, just as terrible but more insidious. In doing so, he blurs the line separating victims from the executioners, and invites us to begin to reflect on the potential for cruelty, but also for empathy, which lies dormant in each of us.
