Summary
In the near future, a war rages and awakens the base instincts of the population. From the underground where he has taken up residence, the Rat Man reigns supreme over the ruins of the City. By promising a liberating and vengeful fire, this prophet recruits followers to accomplish his vile designs. In this ravaged world, a teenager meets boys and girls who, just like him, must ensure their survival. Beings who are both vulnerable and endearing, who quickly form a tight-knit clan and unite to fight the tyranny of the Rat Man. Inspired by the life of the Jewish educator Janusz Korczak, one of the precursors of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, Jean-FranƯcois SÔenÔechal offers a novel of anticipation overflowing with adventure and emotion, but also a reflection on social and political issues. As in his previous novel, Le cri de LÔea, the author demonstrates through fiction that children are an integral part of the society in which they grow up and its sometimes cruel power games, while symbolizing the hope for adults – and for readers – of a return to the ideals of humanity and compassion.
