Bern, 1968: After the death of their father, the sisters Marie and Lena are snatched away from their sick mother's care. The girls are separated and hired out to foster families, where they have to work hard. When one of the two becomes pregnant, the baby is to be taken away from her. But she doesn't want to give up the hope of living in freedom with her child - and of finding her sister again. Years later there is a trail that leads to Germany.
