Left a young widow by the Great War, Pamela accepts employment as amanuensis to the Jarvises, an eccentric couple whose Highgate house is a mecca for artists. It is here the she meets the ruthless John Ashe, and, although she tries to maintain her distance from his activities, she can't help being tainted by them.
