While traveling, Perkins ranges over a psychic landscape as vast as the physical one that surrounds him. We find in his personal journal everything from trancelike exaltation to morbid speculations about death to mundane observations: "My feet are killing me." We watch as he gradually strips away most of the layers of civilization he has known, until --- for a time --- he stands truly alone, one individual man, neither for nor against nature, but a part of it.
