The Emperor Vespasian has sent Falco and his low-life cronies to loot the home of Pertinax, a traitorous, now-dead employee. Pertinax left a lot of loose threads behind, not least of which is Helena Justina, his handsome, high-handed former wife, and Falco's clandestine lover.
