Summary:
Baltimore high school student Hae Min Lee disappeared on January 13, 1999. Her body was found February 9, 1999, the victim of murder by manual strangulation. Adnan Masud Syed, her ex-boyfriend, was convicted of first degree murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment, and robbery and was sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years. Syed was granted a new trial in July 2016. While her murder initially generated only local interest, it was the subject of the podcast Serial in 2014, which brought international attention. Syed has always maintained his innocence, and the author, a family friend, believed him and contacted a producer at This American Life, in hopes of finding a journalist who could shed light on Adnan's story. This led to an investigation by Serial, a podcast with more than 500 million international listeners. In this compelling narrative, Rabia Chaudry presents new key evidence that she maintains dismantles the State's case: a potential new suspect, forensics indicating that after Hae was killed her body was kept somewhere for almost half a day, and documentation withheld by the State that refutes the cell phone evidence. Fans of Serial joined an amazing crowd-sourced investigation into a case riddled with errors and strange twists. Adnan's Story also gives a sense of Adnan's life in prison and weaves in his personal reflections. Chaudry, who is committed to exonerating Adnan, makes it clear that justice has yet to be achieved in this much-examined case.
