Summary:
In 2020 the Church of England Orphanage in Newfoundland marks the 165th anniversary of its founding. From its beginning in 1855 as the Newfoundland Chruch of England Asylum for widows and orphans following a devestating outbreak of cholera in St. John's, until its ending in 1969, approximately 2000 children were cared for by the institution. And not just children; until 1908 widows were also included. And even when the oprhanage closed, the Anglican Church continued the good work it had done with children and their families by investing the assets into The Anglican Charitable Foundation for Children (ACFC). In the years since, the ACFC has helped more than 39,000 children and young people and distributed over $8 million.
