In the foreground are five men holding gaffs and a flag is stuck in the ice beside them. The sweeping sky is yellow, green, and dark blue. Appraiser's note: This piece may appear to be a true primatif done when the artist was seventeen years old. But if great art is "about a subject" rather than "of a subject" this piece meets the criteria; tiny sealers are hunting in an immense icefilled world sheltered only by the dark almost forbidding ship.
