Physical Description:
1 painting : oil ; 12" x 16"
Summary:
The SS Terra Nova caught in the ice field has her stern to the right and smoke drifting from her stack. Little groups of sealers are all over the ice pulling stacks of seal carcasses to the vessel. In the foreground are five men holding gaffs and a flag is stuck in the ice beside them. The sweeping sky is yellow, green, and dark blue. Appraiser's note: This piece may appear to be a true primatif done when the artist was seventeen years old. But if great art is "about a subject" rather than "of a subject" this piece meets the criteria; tiny sealers are hunting in an immense icefilled world sheltered only by the dark almost forbidding ship.
