Summary:
The status of Atlantic salmon in Gander River in 1998 was determined using counts of small & large salmon from a counting fence located on the main stem just above head of tide, recreational fishery data, and biological characteristics information. This paper presents & discusses the results of this assessment in the seventh year of the commercial salmon fishery moratorium. The information collected is used to calculate total river returns & egg deposition, and stock status is evaluated against a conservation egg requirement (calculated in terms of fluvial & lacustrine habitats) derived for the Gander River. Other information in this paper includes life history characteristics for large salmon sampled in the river since 1978, water temperature & water level data since 1989, results of an examination of the impact of counting fence operations on the timing & availability of fish to anglers, and results of a study examining predation on Atlantic salmon smolts by cod.
