In his pioneering research, conducted in the early 1970s, the author examined African-American crime networks in New York & New Jersey in search of an emerging Black Mafia. Lanni argued that traditional Italian American organized crime was being displaced by African-Americans, and in some cases, Puerto Ricans. Lanni’s argument was rooted in ethnic succession theory.
