Sally Harrington, a Connecticut reporter, is in Hollywood with her boyfriend, Spencer Hawes. Initial suspense focuses on Spencer's disappearance, which may be linked to that of Lilliana Martin, a Hollywood actress whose earlier flirtation with Spencer did not go unobserved by Sally. Back in Connecticut, Sally's job seems to be slipping away, too, until circumstances place the heroine in the center of an atypical story: Sally is identified as the last person to have seen Lilliana's ex-boyfriend--Cliff Yarlen--before he turns up dead.
