Mattie Miller, the son of Newfoundlanders, begins his first journey from Ontario to "down home", for the funeral of his Grandfather, in 1957. It will be followed by many more such journeys throughout his life as he learns much about himself, his family and the place of his ancestors. This is a story of the undeniable link between place and family and the spiritual attraction that continuously draws them together. It follows the parallel paths of the coming-of-age of Mattie and the coming-of-age of the newly-minted province of Newfoundland. Heartbreakingly tragic at times, and heartwarmingly joyful at other times, it is a fictional story that anyone who seeks to understand their roots, in any place their family calls home, can relate to.
