Growing up in Heart's Delight-Islington, Newfoundland There were lots of things for children to do while growing up in Heart's Delight-Islington. If you wanted to be bored, you would have to work very hard at it. Like in most of the small communities a system of games and activities were developed or invented over the years that were passed on from generation to generation. I suppose some of the game ideas were brought here by the first settlers to our harbor. I believe that most of these games and activities were common to most of the province, however there were many that were specific to certain areas and communities. I have also learned from my discussions and off the cuff chats with friends that there were variations of some games even in the same communities. Some examples of this occurs occasionally with a game called piddley, oh I am sorry tiddley. Another, sliding verses Randying. I am sure there are others. The Southwest Side and Islington part of our town may have a few different games and or variations thereof.I grew up on the Northeast Side of Heart's Delight-Islington and was a boy so most of my tales and verses in this book will be what I recall from that area, being confident that there won't be enough differences to make anyone cry in despair. Girls on the other hand may be vexed at me for not writing more about the games that they played. I made an honest effort to include girls in as many of my cartoon pictures as possible. There were lots of games that we played together; hide and seek, spot light, four corner chush and farmer in the dell just to mention a few. I was inspired to write this stuff one night after my grandchildren were asking me and their grandmother about what we played at when we were young. After they went to bed, I started to write some notes then it occurred to me why not write a poem. The result of those thoughts is what this book is about. Being a busy boy growing up in Heart's Delight-Islington was a lot of fun and not boring at all. I hope you agree.
