Summary:
Diana was born of parents who had settled in to life and had managed without her, and perhaps found it more difficult to manage with her. She grew up aware of their old-fashionedness and ashamed of the fact that although she loved her mother, she found her father too narrow for words. But above all, she loved her rich old great aunt of whom the family disapproved. Her first love affair was with John. They slipped away on a holiday by the sea together. It was idyllic, with a hunter’s moon under whose auspices Diana had been born, but afterwards she found she was pregnant. She came to John’s digs in London to tell him; he was awkward and unable to cope. ‘But why marry him?’ an old school friend of Diana’s asked her. Then her old aunt died and left her everything. Her world changed, she had a home, the money to keep it up, a new life. She refused John. From this she went on holiday to the south of France. Ii was a new world and here she met Bernard Dante the sculptor. She fell in love with him. John followed her but she refused him, and for ever. When Bernard was earning out a commission in Corsica, she sprang a surprise visit on him. Maybe Diana was ever a huntress, and hers was the Hunter’s Moon.
