Summary:
Eastern hemlock looper (EHL) is a native species to Newfoundland and is the most destructive defoliator of the province's forests. This report reviews the outbreak of EHL in Newfoundland from 1983 to 1995, which eventually caused over 11 million cubic metres of tree mortality. It also contains research papers on the following subjects: EHL population dynamics; development of detection and monitoring systems for EHL; development of EHL control tactics; biodeterioration and utilization of balsam fir stands damaged by EHL; detection and classification of insect damage by remote sensing; socio-economic analysis of EHL damage and control; and an EHL decision support system. The appendix includes questions and answers on the EHL outbreak and its control in Newfoundland.
