Summary:
Newfoundland was a major escort base during World War II as it was in line with the major North Atlantic convoy lanes. As a result there was alot of U-boat activity in our coastal waters. Twice, a U-boat entered a protected anchorage(once under an entering freighter) and sank ships. One U-boat shot torpedos at the entrance to the capital city St. John's Harbour. The Germans also landed an automatic weather station in northern Labrador and there is evidence to suggest that a U-boat was going to land commandos to attach the RCAF airbase just outside St. John's. During the war, there were several major fires, all attributed to arson, and at least one spy was apprehended. Newfoundland had a pretty interesting war.
