Talented singer Lily Blake becomes a pariah after a newspaper falsely accuses her of having had an affair with a newly-appointed cardinal. She returns to her hometown of Lake Henry, New Hampshire, where she meets journalist John Kipling, who takes on his former colleagues in the big city in her defense.
