Maria, Naill and Celia had an unsettled childhood, growing up in the shadow of their famous theatrical parents. Maria and Niall are unrelated "little skeletons from Pappy and Mama's respective cupboards", which leads to much unhappiness in adult life when Maria's marriage fails because it is not her husband whom she loves but Niall and her stage career.
