General Note:
1) In addition to transcribed dedication which is in an elaborate cartouche at the bottom of the map, there is another one in the upper left, even more elaborate which states: To the Right HoN: Archibld [sic] of Islay, This chart is most humbly dedicated by Saml. Gledhill Esqr. Lieut. Governor of Placentia in NewfoundLand in America. Below this and part of the cartouche is MEMINI. There is a merman and a mermaid figure, fish, flags, spears, a thistle, and other items in the cartouche. Some parts seem to have been added after the rest, such as the "bld" after "Archi". The lower one has flowers, leaves, and branches.

2) The main map of the town on the beach and the harbour mouth shows stages, wharves, and other buildings, including the Governours House,Gov. Stage, Fort Frederick, various admirals' stages, and has a list of items keyed to the map by letter with dates from 1722 to 1727 which has been used to date the map. Names of house owners or occupants are among these, as well as a church and a lighthouse. Relief is indicated pictorially, including a sand bar or shoal. There is a dotted line which may indicate the town boundary. It has a decorative compass rose with numberous rhumb lines and a fleur-de-lis north arrow oriented to the lower left corner. A scale bar of 200 yards is present. Noted on the map is "This is a Fine Large Stone Beach on which the Fishermen :cure their fish:".

3) Inset : A Plan of the Bay and Harbour of Placentia, 24.4 x 32.1 cm., Scale (ca. 1:27 000]. Covers from Point Verte to beyond Scren (Seven?) Islands and notes Placentia Harbour, New Light House & Old Castle, Watering Place, Cape Creve Coeur, Placentia Bay, Beach, Placentia, and Quarry Hill in addition. Relief indicated pictorially and depths by soundings. Has a decorative compass rose and fleur-de-lis north arrow oriented to the lower left corner. There is a long text giving sailing directions into the harbour and bay. It extends below the inset into the rest of the map and describes the anchorages and other aspects of the harbour. There is a scale bar of 1 English mile.
