Even though her father is in prison for embezzlement, ten-year-old Effie considers herself pretty lucky until her mother's old friend, Father Frank, comes to stay with them. Effie's friend Aurora decides to quit their Catholic school to attend public school and her contrary sister begings to transform herself into "Saint Marcy."
