Summary:
In To a Watery Grave, independent curator and artist Andrew T. Hunter poetically explores the idea of nautical tragedy in art and popular culture. Responding to representations of shipwrecks and other sea disasters in paintings, museum artifacts, and liter-ature, he considers the impact of such events as the Yankee Gale of 1851, the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and the sinking of the paddle wheeler Victoria on the Thames River in London, Ontario. He also muses on the significance of lost ships in works of fiction such as Moby Dick, The Maid of the Mist, and the Victorian religious narrative The Rock of Ages. In addition to Hunter's illuminating reflections, To a Watery Grave features full-colour reproductions of many works of art from an exhibition of the same title at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in Charlottetown. These include contemporary pieces by Gerald Ferguson, Gu Xiong, and Patterson Ewen, as well as historic paintings by such celebrated artists as Paul Peel and Robert Harris. With this highly original and beautiful book, Hunter shows the extraordinary potential of the art gallery as a locus for storytelling.
