It is the Russian occupation, not the German, that destroys the aristocratic Kolbeck family. In 1940 they and thousands of other Poles are driven into the wastes of Siberia. Stephanie Kolbeck must fend for herself, amongst people who consider her inferior and share a secret about her past.
