Summary:
Ned Parker is a hansom cab driver in London in the year 1870. Inquisitive and lively, he inherited his cab from his father who died under mysterious circumstances. One of his fares disappears -- literally. When next Ned sees him, the man is in the morgue where Ned has been taken by Detective Sergeant Jackson to identify the corpse. When Ned's fellow cabby Herbert Summers is arrested for murder, Ned rallies all London's 6,000 cabbies to help find the real culprit. His own investigations take him to a shady auction house, music halls (where his girlfriend Millie is determined to become a star despite Ned's objections) and an underground station deep beneath the Thames full of strange sounds and apparitions. The most dangerous gangs of criminals in London are run by Mr. John and the Colonel; both interrogate Ned making references to the fate of Ned's father. Undaunted, Ned follows the trail that takes him to the British Museum, the Admiralty, the Silver Vaults and to music halls where Millie is getting carried away by potential fame -- but at a price. "Hangman's Corner' is a rip-roaring adventure mystery lace with humor and vivid characters and with an impelling plot that uncovers the mystery of Ned's father and culminates in a madcap chase through London in a hearse.
