Summary:
Portugal and Newfoundland have a long history and share many things in common, For example, as will be discussed some historians argue that the Portuguese knew of Newfoundland before John Cabot "discovered" the island in 1497. For centuries, the Portuguese have been coming to Newfoundland to harvest bacalhau - cod. And, for centuries Newfoundlanders have been harvesting cod. Both jurisdictions consume much fish and salt cod is a mainstay in the Portuguese diet, even today. Despite the depleted cod stocks in the post-moratorium era, Newfoundland still exports cod to Portugal.
