Summary:
Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) have been a primary food source of the Mi'kmaw for time out of mind. Plamu are considered to be one of the most important gifts of the Creator in the Mi'kmaw world view, and reliance on salmon for food is noted in the earliest travellers' and explorers' accounts. As sport fishermen and geologists 'discovered' Newfoundland's interior in the late 19th century, guides from Miawpukek and other Mi'kmaw communities played a leading role in hunting and fishing for food to supply remote camps.
