Summary:
Analyzes the dynamics of growth in overall employment and number of businesses in Atlantic Canada over 1989-93 and presents summarized versions of research studies on the economy of the Atlantic Provinces. The first two chapters review the distribution of firms by industry sector, business dynamics, job creation and loss, employment distribution by firm size and industry sector, and self-employment. Chapter three examines home-based businesses, presenting results of a survey profiling such businesses and the barriers to their growth. The final three chapters study entrepreneurship: among francophones, young entrepreneurs, profiles of entrepreneurial ventures, sources of assistance and support, barriers to entrepreneurship, future directions, and education for entrepreneurs. Relevant statistics are included throughout.
