One crisp fall evening in 1893, Mrs. Alvah June Mellon, a caregiver with the Medico Society, arrives at a rundown tenement building in New York and briskly climbs the stairs to the garret, where she expects to perform her usual duty of caring for the indigent and abandoned on their deathbeds. There she sets eyes on her newest patient and realizes she is in the presence of a most unusual soul: the charismatic Maggie Fox, one of a trio of sisters famous for their purported ability to communicate with ghosts.
