Summary:
The Great Wall of China cannot be photographed. It is not a line of stones on the ground. It is an idea. It is not even a wall. It is many walls built over roughly 2000 years by different dynasties. We tend to think that 'China' surrounded itself by a wall. It was rather that the different peoples who in the course of history came to constitute China put up walls of their own. Invaders from the north would overrun one stretch of wall and erect another further out. Eventually these sections were joined together to make the wall we know.
