Summary:
This book tells the story of Wayne Mushrow--how he grew up in the small town of Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, and who while diving discovered two mariner's astrolabes in the 1980s; and struggled for over twenty years to have those astrolabes displayed in the Port aux Basques museum each summer, in an effort to help to promote tourism on the South-West Coast of Newfoundland. It's a story of hard work, grit, and determination and a tale of amazing discoveries, but it's also a story of a mistrusting, recalcitrant and intractable government bureaucracy that made life difficult for the discoverer and unnecessarily delayed these priceless objects from being available to residents and tourists alike. Fortunately in the end, saner and wiser heads prevailed and these valuable, rare astrolabes are available to all to see. As two of only three such 17th and 18th Century marine navigational devices in Canadian museums, they may now be found in the Port aux Basques museum from June to September and in the Rooms in St John's for the balance of the year. And finally, these rare objects are now named after their discover who had always offered to turn them over to the government of Newfoundland & Labrador.
