Karma-glin-pa's text, Bar do thos grol (Book of the dead) is unique to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. It is read aloud to dying persons as they pass from this life into the next. Part 1 of this series documents its history, and its acceptance and use in hospices in Europe and North America. Remarkable footage also shows its traditional application in the rites and liturgies performed for a recently deceased elder in Ladakh, India. Includes an interview with the Dalai Lama, who shares his views on the book's meaning and importance.
