With the nation entrenched in the Civil War in 1862, Brenton and Jordana Baldwin travel west to find Victoria and her husband Kiernan O'Connor, who is working in the gold fields of California. With every step that distances them from the civilized world, they encounter adventure and danger that ties them to the establishment of the Union Pacific railroad.
